The enamels represent heraldry paint that was used on the shields of battle, for decorative or reduce the effects of oxidation.


The word enamel comes from the Hebrew word "hasmal" which in Latin is translated as "smaltun".
According to legend the king, Porsena, ruler of Tuscany, which were used dishes coated with enamel and then derives the name of "porcelain", a well-made vessels.

Although according to historical records, was a French silversmith Jean Toutin, who discovered the enamels. In heraldry, the word enamel, including the colors, metals and linings.

In heraldry there are five colors: red, called "gules", blue called "azure", green called  "sinople", the black called  "sword" and purple "purple ". The color purple or violet is the characteristic of belonging to the universe of colors and metals.

We have two metals, gold and silver. The first is depicted in yellow and the second blank.

In English heraldry, there are 3 additional colors: orange, fawn and blood.

When representing the shields in prints, use the technique discovered by Italian Jesuit, Father Silvestre Petra, where the red or "gules" is represented by lines made in "stick", or vertical. The blue or "Azure" was represented by belt lines, or horizontal ranging from one side of the shield. The green or "vert" through in-band or diagonal lines from right to left. The black or "saber" stick by perpendicular lines, and horizontal strip. The purple or "purple" with lines made in bar or diagonal from left to right. For metals, gold is shown by points regularly spread over the field of the shield. Silver is expressly leaving the field clean and without any signal.


Gold symbolizes as topaz gemstones. In the armories of kings is called "sun" in the armories of the nobility either Duke, Marquess, Earl, etc., is called "topaz" and the nobility in general "gold." The color gold represents the sun if it relates to the stars, Leo Gold represents the twelve signs of the Zodiac.

The emerald symbolizes the sinople "green" and the zodiacal sign corresponds to Mercury, its meaning is the hope, abundance and freedom, those who hold this enamel on its coat are obliged to help the farmers in general and the orphans and the poor who are oppressed.
